REPORT ON WORLD HEART DAY 2007
Press Conference: Press conferences were held on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 and Thursday, September 20, 2007at the Secretariat of the Nigerian Heart Foundation to sensitize the public on the up coming events of the World Heart Day 2007. The press conferences were well covered by the print and electronic media.
Symposium and Free Heart Screening: Symposium titled "Team Up for Healthy Hearts" took place on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Ikeja, Lagos. The Symposium was chaired by Prof. A. F. B. Mabadeje, a member of the Executive Board of Nigerian Heart Foundation. Lagos State Health Commissioner, Dr. Jide Idris was the Special Guest of Honour. In his paper titled, "A National Heart Health Policy: Time for Action", Executive Director of Nigerian Heart Foundation, Dr. K. K. Akinroye, who identified risk factors for heart disease to include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use, low intake of fruits and vegetables, overweight and physical inactivity stated that there is the need to adopt heart health policies that would check the rising incidences of the disease. In his presentation, Medical Manager of Neimeth Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Jude Duru-Onweni said some factors that contribute to heart diseases are sex, race, smoking, alcoholism, hereditary(genetic), diets including salt and fat-laden food, urbanization and sophistication. Presenting a paper titled. "Unmasking the Silent Killer", the Product Manager of Pfizer Global Pharmaceutical, Pharm. Abiola Oladapo called on individuals to determine their risks of heart failure, adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Folashade Daniel, a Consultant Cardiologist spoke on the activities of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in the are of heart health care. Dr. Ladi Awosika, Health Insurance expert spoke on "Health insurance and the care of the Heart". Mr. Oluwafemi Akinbode, a tobacco control advocate spoke on "Tobacco Control in Nigeria: Today and the Future" Mr. Akinbode who called for complete ban of advertisement including the sale of tobacco in the country disclosed that over 9,527 tobacco related cases were recorded in Lagos State Hospitals alone in 2006. He also canvassed for high taxes on cigarette and protection of non-smokers by declaring smoke-free public places in the country. The Commissioner of Health who commended the Nigerian Heart Foundation for organizing the symposium and free heart screening stated that all hands must be on deck to ensure the reduction in the occurrence of heart diseases in the country. At the end of the symposium, participants and the general public were screened free of charge.
D'African Fashion Show: On Sunday, September 30, 2007, a fashion show was organized at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. Timbre and Sound in partnership with Nigerian Heart Foundation put together the show to show the importance of a healthy heart. Besides enlightening the public on how to keep a healthy heart with free heart screening given to participants, the event also showcased the designs of some indigenous designers as well as a guest designer form South Africa. The designs, many of which were done in a touch of red brought the rich culture and beauty of the continent to the runway. The designers included Frankelli, Steve Ray, Bayo Adegbe (Modela), Mithrans. There was also Ali Adams who came in from South Africa to showcase his collections and support a worthy cause.
Walk For Your Heart: A 5-kilometer walk tagged "Walk for Your Heart" was organized on Saturday, October 6, 2007 to sensitize Nigerians on the need to keep their heart healthy. The walk which was attended started from Ikeja Local Government Secretariat and ended at the Ministry of Health, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris disclosed while addressing the large crowd of people that participated in the walk that Lagos State Government plans to establish a cardiac center for the diagnosis and management of heart diseases in the State. A commendation plaque was presented to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Raji Babatunde Fashola (SAN) for his contribution to the healthcare of citizens of Lagos State. The plaque was received by Dr. Jide Idris, Commissioner for Health on behalf of the Governor.
Art, Quiz & Drama Competition For Secondary Schools: To round up the activities for World Heart Day 2007, art, quiz and drama competition was organized on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Addressing the well-attended event by students from Adrao International School, Aunty Ayo Comprehensive Senor Girl's Secondary School and Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, the Vice-President of the Nigerian Heart Foundation, Engr. Oluyomi Adeyemi-Wilson stressed the need for school authorities to encourage physical activities by providing playing ground in the various school environment. At the end of the competition. Adrao International School came first in the quiz, drama and art competition. Aunty Ayo Comprehensive Senor Girl's Secondary School took the 2nd position in quiz and art while they came 3rd in drama. Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School came 2nd in drama and 3rd in quiz and art competition.
